Project: Support for a forum on "Financial Integration – One Regional Capital Market" (forum website)
Agency: Caribbean Latin American Action (CLAA) (website)

Objective

The forum was designed to define the public policy changes that are needed to integrate and harmonize the capital markets of the Caribbean. The conference aimed to attract greater investment flows by building a constructive public/private sector partnership to aggressively accelerate the pace of integration, harmonization and the impartial application of the law throughout the region.

It sought to obtain unqualified commitment to the process of development currently underway in the financial services sector of the Caribbean. By bringing together private sector leaders as well as public sector legislators and regulators, the conference was able to identify a list of next steps to bring down the barriers to more efficient movement of capital to the productive sectors of the Caribbean. This was the first Caribbean regional conference on the issue of capital market integration.

The CARICOM Single Market and Economy calls for the establishment of an integrated capital market in the Community under Article 44 of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas. The forum provided an opportunity to raise the profile of this issue.
