guidance and the development of a business capacity building program

Overview
C-TRADECOM contracted The Services
Group (TSG) to conduct a a
high-level diagnostic of the Antigua and Barbuda business environment.
The effort was intended to assist the government to assess its trade
readiness and develop strategies for improving the country’s
competitiveness in the global marketplace. The initiative was also
intended to identify opportunities for additional C-TRADECOM cooperation.
The diagnostic included
- assessment of the private sector in Antigua and Barbuda including
a review of relevant literature
- evaluation of the trade performance and trade related policies
of Antigua and Barbuda
- interviews with private sector enterprises to determine regulatory
constraints, access to capital and trade finance, international
market knowledge and production standards, as well as firm capacity
The C-TRADECOM team analyzed the capacity of government institutions
to manage trade and customs facilitation issues and to undertake
and manage private sector development initiatives. The primary objective
of these activities was the identification of specific opportunities
to develop and implement initiatives that would enhance the competitiveness
of Antigua / Barbuda and its industries.
Results
The diagnostic was completed within 28 days and 3 subprojects
were developed for implementation:
- A "Business Roadmap"
- A Tourism Sector Community linkage “clustering”
initiative
- A Food Hygiene and Standards project for the local Hotel and
Tourism Association
