Project: Technical assistance to OECS Standards Units to improve metrology capabilities
Agency/Counterpart: OECS Standards Bureaus

Overview

C-TRADECOM is providing technical assistance to the Caribbean Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) and the National Bureaus of Standards and Standards Units in the countries of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to assist with the enhancement of the metrology capabilities of Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts, St Lucia and St. Vincent. The standards bureaus of these countries currently offer very limited metrology services. With the passage of the various metrology legislation and regulations the standards bureaus in these countries have become responsible for the verification and calibration of weighing and measuring equipment used in trade.

For OECS countries to enjoy rules based local trading environments and to participate successfully in international trade, these countries must possess the capacity to verify and calibrate weighing and measuring equipment used in trade. However, to carry out these functions, it is necessary to establish national secondary measurement standards that have traceability to international standards and that are maintained in a suitably conditioned environment. They also require equipment to check working standards against these secondary standards. C-TRADECOM will assist the Bureaus in the improvement of the following:

National secondary standards

Training of metrology personnel

Creation of expertise in metrology function

Providing equipment for the verification of instruments used in trade

This project will address the above problems and establish a viable basic metrology system in the seven OECS countries.
